Researching Your Own Family History

Researching family history is fun and rewarding.

I started reasearching about 6 years ago. I used everthing I could to get information on the web. I didn't realize that I could get much more information by getting records. Like birth and death records. Don't get me wrong I got a lot of info on the web, but when it came down to my dads family forget it, it was like looking for people who never exsisted. There was no information on my madian name at all on the web, so I had to go to records. I started with what I knew. My father and his brothers. Now mind you all are deseased so I couldn't ask anyone. As far as there families I cannot find any of them and don't really know where to look. So I went and got my dads death records from there I got birth records and that showed me his parents names and where they were born and when so I went and got some of those records and so on. I found more information then i knew was there. Now I am scrimping and saving again to make another trip to Poughkeepsie to get more records.
So let me say this if by chance you are looking for the Syrotchen name please contact me and we can put our heads together and share what we know and maybe even get more info.

Reasearch tips:

Remember, most everyone has two family names: your father's, but also your mother's. Don't feel you must restrict your research to just your paternal family tree.
Be sure that the information you get is correct, you can't beleive everything you read, check it all out first. I have m,ade my share of mistakes, I have had wrong dates and some names were even misspelt.

I asked all of my living relatives for permission to include information about them on this site. Some did not want their information published on the web, and others preferred I not include certain types of information (for example, birth dates). In all cases I have respected their wishes.
